8 years ago, in 2016, there were some incredible advancements in technology. Gravitional waves were directly detected for the first time, Artificial Intelligence took another leap with Google’s DeepMind’s AlphaGo winning for the first time against the world champion, and ControlUp’s historical monitoring product, ControlUp Insights, was introduced to the world.

All of these achievements were possible by ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’ — that is, they elevated what is possible by building on what came before. Which brings us to another moment where building upon the past gives us something better, easier and faster than ever before. ControlUp Insights provided a foundation for the next revolution in historical monitoring and is now bring retired for what’s next.

With the migration to our DEX architecture, we’ve revamped the historical data and reporting pipeline. It’s now so performant that you can see historical data in ControlUp in about 5 minutes… Which makes our historical monitoring having more recent information than some others have in their “real-time” data! This means when an issue occurs, you can get both the data as it’s occurring AND you can look back in time from 5 minutes ago on. You get the complete coverage of the metrics in your environment. Let’s go over some of the new features in the historical data and reporting.

New distribution graphs show the spread of where your resources reside in the range

Faster Time to Metric

The historical monitoring architecture has been revamped for higher performance, allowing visibility to historical monitoring data from only a few minutes ago! In addition to the better performance, ControlUp has revamped the communication required and now only a single outbound URL needs to be whitelisted, resulting in a more secure environment.

Environment Assessment

The environment assessment gives you a heads up display of the performance of your environment over the last 30 days. You can drill down to see the performance of your hosts, machines, user sessions, client devices and the published applications. These reports are excellent for identifying problematic usage trends. The Environment Assessment report displays aggregated resource usage data and activity trends from the past 30 days, updated to the minute that the report is generated.

Sizing Recommendations

Back from ControlUp Insights is our new sizing recommendation report. ControlUp looks at historical performance data of your machines and can offer recommendations for tuning your environment. Do you have enough CPU or maybe you’ve added too many? ControlUp can identify these machines and provides evidence for its recommendations for you to review.

Azure Cost Analysis

Sizing recommendations is awesome to maximize your on-prem infrastructure, does it work with the cloud too? And the answer is YES. ControlUp will monitor the performance of your machines in Azure and will make recommendations for specific machine types. If you’ve provisioned a machine that is larger than the workload necessary, ControlUp can identify other Azure VM Sizes that will provide similar resources at a lower cost. Conversely, if you have a machine that is underspec’ed for its workload then Controlup will suggest higher performing VM Sizes that should provide better performance. This comes with a cost estimator you can review to see what the potential savings can be as well!

New Metrics

More metrics have been added to the historical monitoring giving you a clearer picture of the performance of your environment and how it changed as you look back in time. New Metrics include Citrix Provisioning Service Metrics such as PVS Device Boot Time, Disk Type, Retry Counts and more!

GPU metrics are now tracked and you can review the performance of your configured Nvidia, AMD and Intel GPU’s in your virtual environment.

New App Trend Reports

Application trend reports now includes GPU Utilization, Disk Utilization and Network Utilization, giving you more information on the critical performance information of your applications! It’s easier than ever to spot when a process has had a change that consumes more or less resources with App Trends.

As we journey through the innovative enhancements brought by our migration to the DEX architecture, it’s evident that ControlUp is revolutionizing the way we approach historical data and reporting. With performance so advanced that historical monitoring updates appear in near real-time, ControlUp ensures that you’re always a step ahead, providing insights that others might only offer as “current” data. From environment assessments that offer a panoramic view of your system’s performance over the last month to sizing recommendations that optimize your infrastructure, and the meticulous Azure cost analysis aimed at maximizing efficiency and reducing expenses, ControlUp is your go-to for making informed decisions.

But the innovations don’t stop there; new metrics and faster time to metric capabilities enhance your understanding of your environment’s dynamics, while new app trend reports bring crucial application performance data to your fingertips. This comprehensive suite of features is designed to empower IT professionals and decision-makers with the tools they need to diagnose, analyze, and optimize their digital environments effectively.
